The Beginning

Why? Why do we want to become more sustainable? We are looking to better ourselves for the future. We want to get back to eating what we should, growing what we need and bartering and helping others to fill in the gaps with what we can't get. I want to show people that even though we are in town we still provide a significant amount for ourselves. Im hoping it will be a simpler way of life for us. My husband and I both love permiculture, vermiculture and survivalist type living and since we won't be leaving the city anytime soon we should make the best of what we have and give it a shot. While we are at it see if we can make it worth while money wise and health wise. Who knows what the next year will bring. But we are ready to give this our best shot. Another reason for going sustainable is to be less of a consumer and to waste less.
We are starting off our adventure with a few things already. We will be adding and improving our small micro farm.
The land we have is a 1/4 of an acre in an Oregon suburb. We will also forage and harvest some from local forest as well as barter. On this land to start with we have 4 kinds of grapes, a dwarf apple tree with multiple types of apples grafted to it, raspberries, domestic blackberries, sun chokes, and rose bushes. We also have a small flock of chickens and a few mason bees.

The improvements we are looking forward to are: expanding our poultry to muscovies and quail, rabbits, raised garden beds, container gardens, chicken coop expansion, rabbit hutch expansion, mushroom, seedlings, mason bee expansion, food preservation, and much more. Really the list of things we would like to do are endless. With what we have looked into we have years of improvements to come.
By the end of this growing season we are hoping to have grown, foraged, and bartered enough to fill or fridge, freezer and pantry for a significant length of time. We would like to get back to eating what we should.
Im learning a ton about what we have already and what to add. Im hoping through sharing my experience I help others make the change to a more sustainable style of living. I will continue to learn and share all that I come acorss.
