This past weekend we got our first rabbit hutches and rabbits so I figure this would be a good time to introduce our foundation rabbits and see their digs to live in. So far we are so pleased with our small investment.
First off we found two hutches on our local craigslist and started repairing cleaning them out. The first one we picked up was $30 it is about 2.5ft x 3ft x 3.5ft. It was in good condition needed one leg reinforced and a good claening and this one was ready to go. The second hutch we found is much bigger 3ft x 6ft x 3.5ft. It needed a little more work. It was also much dirtier but it was only $20 and significantly larger. We added to this one a reinforced bottom so the inside wire floor wont sag and we wont have rabbits dropping throught hte bottom. It also needed a new latch and reinforced the exsisting door. The top of the hutch when we purchased was open wire so we aded three chalks in the front and added a slanted roof. We then just had to clean that one up. Both are very nice and give our rabbits adequate space to live a healthy life.
The next thing we add to add were our Buns! This was the best part. For our first buns we got New Zealand rabbits. We are breeding them to be meat, pets, show rabbits and more.
Our first to arrive was Captain Carrot. He is a 10 month old black New Zealand buck. He was a 4-h rabbit but the 4-her lost interest. He is about 11lbs right now and a big sweet boy. He is the smaller hutch since he is best by himself.
The other two are sisters and are both does. They are about 9 weeks old. Our Red New Zealand we named Poppy like the flower. She is very active but sweet and cuddly. The other is a Blue Tipped Steel New Zealand. Her name is Blossom she is by far my favorite. She is very cuddly and friendly.
We are very excited to get started we will be adding more rabbits as we find hutches. We are always looking to improve the New Zealand breed and make nice healthy rabbits. Our rabbits will be pedigreed.
