We have a small flock of chickens. We rotate a few out every so often to keep some in our freezer and some producing eggs for us. Right now we are in the transition phase so we will be having new arrivals and some of our older girls will be headed to camp freezer.

Our flock of chickens consists of a variety of breeds. I love to see the different chickens as well as eggs. W ehave a Buff Orpington, a Barred Rock, a Rhode Island Red, Delaware, Cuckoo Maran, and Americauna.

We are looking to add a few chicks here soon. We are hoping to add some wyandottes, or speckled sussex to our flock.

The feed mix we have our chickens on is an egg layer pellet, black oil sunflower seeds, and oats. They also get supplemented with fresh garden greens, grasses, veggie scraps, and suet cakes when it is especially cold and yucky. They have several water supplys that is one area we are looking to improve is our watering and feeding systems. they also get oyster shell and sand and grit to roll in.

We feed our chicks a non medicated chick starter and mix in some oats and bird seed with a few fresh greens and grass. We do add a probiotic to the water of our chicks when raising them in the starter tub. We keep them in the tub until adult feathers start showing up and the weather is a little more mild. We then introduce them to the flock. So far we have had little to no issues with our chicks.

We have a consistent flow of eggs and a few fresh chickens here and there. We love our chickens and name them all. A few of them even come over and like the be petted. Our one will even come when called. When getting into this I had no clue the personalities they have. So far our chicken experience has been very rewarding. We look forward to adding to our flock and this summer to creating a much large mixed poultry run that will include chickens, muscovies and quail.
